This paper discusses several approaches to estimate the benefit of Electronic Stability Program (ESP) which will under certain assumption estimate the maximum benefit to be expected. As long as only restricted field experience exists, no effectiveness can be derived. These approaches establish a range, in which the unknown effectiveness might be. An assumption of these approaches is that side impacts against a pole might change into frontal impacts, due to reduced vehicle rotation. This effects the effectiveness of systems like side airbags that are designed to mitigate injuries in these cases. According to new systems of accident avoidance, it is inevitable that primary and secondary safety, crash avoidance and injury mitigation is looked at in an integrated approach. Otherwise we will not achieve an optimum benefit in terms of fatality and injury avoidance with limited resources. For the covering abstract see ITRD E107709.
