Abstract

The basic goal of the study is to address a series ofqueations relativa to the problem that it is essential thatfurtl2er research is directed toward identifying measures(highway and operational characteristics) other than acci-dents, which can be used in the overall highway safetyimprovement process. Specific questions are a.o. 1. Whatare the highway, operational and accident characteristicswhich describe the hazardousness of specific highway situa-tions 2, Do the surrogate measures selected on the basis ofhost research studies, exhibit sensitivity with ..accident bistory, and 3. Do safety improvements at alocation change the accident characteristics as well asthe surrogate measures.
