Abstract

This report has examined the accident record at roundabouts in Kent and the following findings can be highlighted: 1) On average 3.1 PIAs will occur at a roundabout in Kent over a 3 year period; 2) A small roundabout (with 2.0 PIAs per 3 years) is the safest size; 3) 3-arm roundabouts (with 2.3 PIAs per 3 years) are the safest number of arms; 4) 16% of all accidents at roundabouts resulted in serious or fatal injuries. This compares to some 26% of all accidents in Kent which result in serious or fatal injuries; 5) 28% of accidents at roundabouts involving powered two-wheelers resulted in serious of fatal accidents; 6) 4 arm mini roundabouts have an accident rate over twice that of 3-arm mini roundabouts; and 7) Mini roundabouts are twice as dangerous as other roundabouts for pedestrians and pedal cyclists.
