Abstract

Urban arterials constitute only 15% of the road network in South African cities, yet 60% of road accidents take place on them. One-third of the accidents occur between intersections, and this paper attempts to identify the environmental factors contributing to the accidents on these road sections. Environmental and accident data were collected and speed and traffic volumes were measured and the principal findings are presented.
