Abstract

This paper was presented at session 32 - safety. Collisions between two cars at uncontrolled intersections comprised a significant proportion of the injury-producing accidents investigated in the course of the Adelaide in-depth study. This paper describes those features which were common to most of these cases, both in relation to causal factors and to the consequences of the crash. Ways in which the frequency of these accidents might be reduced are discussed and evaluated on the basis of interviews with accident- involved drivers and on observations of driver behaviour at these locations. The results of interviews with persons residing adjacent to each location are also presented. It is concluded that the potential exists to reduce the frequency of crashes at urban intersections which are presently uncontrolled. This potential is not being realised largely because of the assumptions on which existing warrants for traffic controls are based. The number of the covering abstract of the conference is IRRD no. 239340.
