Automatic traffic counters are used for on-going studies involving regular monitoring of traffic flows. The counters are rotated regularly among a number of sites throughout the year. Local authorities frequently use this sort of procedure to obtain estimates of annual flow on a network of roads. In this report, several methods of deriving these estimates are examined. Recommendations are given for the most appropriate counting schedules and a simple method of assessing the accuracy of the estimates is provided. (Author/publisher)
