Abstract

To achieve a common operational picture across traffic jurisdictions has always been a challenge. The classical debate of access regulation on to highways done without consultation to the city traffic management of arterial roads and signals have more than once caused significant issues and reduced the effectiveness of urban traffic management. In addition to this world, new security concerns and the need to share information outside of traffic management is becoming more important. Although there is strong need, solutions to integrate various disparate systems have been plagued by costs, disparate technologies and even political sensitiveness. This paper will investigate an alternative to address this issue by processing the information at the graphical level and providing the proper input, output and control capabilities. With this approach, disparate systems can be integrated without actually having to change any of the existing system. Graphical level processing integrates by working at the problem at the visual layer thus bypassing the need for application level integration. This capability alone is not sufficient as the critical second piece is the ability to package this information and capability and deliver it over standard IP networking technology. Although not fully integrated from an application perspective, this solution provides an immediate and economical solution to an otherwise irresolvable problem. For some applications, the fact that it is not integrated is an added security benefit. Therefore, this paper provides an outline of the architecture to achieve this.
