Abstract

The Centrico project is the largest exercise in international coordination of roadside ITS in Europe. Within the framework of this project approx. 380 m. Euros have been spent within 6 years on infrastructure and software along the "ITS chain" from monitoring to traffic management for the Trans European Road Network. Since the Centrico project area covers a large part of Europe's economic heartland with road traffic and cross border well above the average, the Project can be seen as a pacemaker in intelligent traffic management on the major motorways and in connection to urban areas. The contribution reflects the achievements and lesson learnt form the past but concentrates on the directions road based ITS is heading towards from the European road operator's perspective. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
