Abstract

Over the next decade we can expect the number of ACT drivers aged 70 plus to increase by about 45%. Most of these drivers have considerable experience and are generally regarded as good and safe drivers. There are however, some among this group who will experience problems and difficulties that will have an impact on their ability to continue to drive safely. Some will need to consider retiring from driving while others will need to adjust their driving habits or become familiar with changed driving rules and circumstances. COTA is concerned about all older drivers and we recognise the important role mobility plays in the maintenance of quality lifestyles. So much so that COTA, the NRMA ACT Road Safety Trust and the Department of Urban Services continue to work together to enhance the capacity of older drivers and to promote safe and responsible driving. COTA strongly supports efforts to maintain and improve the driving skills of older drivers. COTA urges drivers to evaluate their skills and to recognise that there may be factors, which inhibit their ability to operate a vehicle as effectively as they may have in the past. This handbook focuses on giving older drivers information about how to determine for themselves whether they are driving safely, how to continue to drive safely and when to make the decision to hand in their licences. There are risks for drivers over 80 years, and as a community we need to work together to be aware of those risks, and to minimise them. (Author/publisher)
