Abstract

The ACTEURS project is an applied research project on the behaviour of tunnel users. Phase 1 (called Package 1) of the study involved three Alpine motorway companies, AREA, SFTRF and ATMB, and a company specialising in cognitive science, Dedale and the CETU. During the first phase of the project ( 2003-2005), ACTEURS examined users' behaviour both in normal driving conditions and in a crisis situation. However, the primary goal of this first phase was to inform the various parties involved with tunnel safety of the need for a drastic change in understanding tunnel users' behaviour andmanaging tunnel use. It is a complete paradigm shift that spurred new progress within the profession, allowing Phase 2 (Package 2) to be initiated with new motorway partners such as the EEIG-TMB, APRR and ESCOTA, as well as the Ministry of Civil Engineering.
