Abstract

Road accidents involving cyclists are a particular problem in Denmark and led to the formulation of an action plan comprising 19 measures to improve cyclist safety. Details are given of the main causes of accidents. Infrastructure improvements to be carried out to help prevent such accidents include a) road markings at intersections and T-junctions, b) advanced stop lines at traffic signals, c) the establishment of cycle lanes and cycle paths, d) new markings around bus stops and e) improved visibility at junctions. Other measures include tighter standards for bicycle lamps, reflectors and brakes, campaigns for the use of safe bicycles and helmets, and campaigns to aimed at influencing cycling and driving behaviour.
