Abstract

Traditional traffic flow models are now considered not sufficiently sophisticated to cope with the need for better traffic demand forecasts. Activity analysis is explained and its development as a method of traffic demand forecasting is outlined. The complexity of such models, and the amount of data required, may prevent them from having a significant impact. The body of the book is organised into sections on : modelling developments; theories and empirical analyses; data needs and data representation; and policy anaylisis. Future research directions are outlined.
