Abstract

Currently, the introduction of "movement control" to traffic signal control systems is being earnestly deliberated in Japan. In response to the need of this "movement control", development of a new traffic signal control system is being undertaken. The advent of personal computers (PC) in recent years with lower cost but advanced functions has indeed presented a great opportunity for its wider application in "movement control" in general and traffic signal control system in particular. Using a PC as the fundamental control unit, a highly applicable, expandable and functional decentralized traffic signal control system is being developed in Japan. This newly developed system was applied to Shanghai City under a project named "Traffic signal control system for traffic safety model project in Shanghai City". The results of this project were recently presented in the Yokohama ITS Conference. In addition to further improvement of the system algorithm, results of actual field operation using this improved algorithm were established in this research. Based on this improved algorithm, a new traffic signal control algorithm was achieved.
