Abstract

The need for implementing eCall (Emergency Calls) across Europe is evident. The PSAP's (Public Safety Answering Points) are starting to adjust their infrastructure to receive eCalls from the vehicles before 2007, when eCall tests will be performed. The Service Provider was introduced in the formal E-Merge project, but its role has not been sufficiently worked out. Asthe Service Provider will assist the PSAP with its primary rescue task, it is obvious that the tasks and responsibilities should be well defined. Aprofessional Service Provider that cooperates well with the PSAP increases road safety and lets the PSAP focus on its primary task: to direct the emergency services. This article will address the role and need of the Service Provider in eCall. It will also report on the early findings of the eCall Service Provider study in the Netherlands.
