Over the past two decades, graduated driver licensing (GDL) has been the primary focus of research on motor vehicle crashes among adolescents. GDL ensures that beginners acquire a substantial amount of driving experience under conditions that minimize their risk of crashing as they learn by doing. Its widespread adoption in North America, beginning in the mid-1990s, has been a remarkable success story. Dozens of studies have documented the crash-reduction effects of this sensible approach.
