Abstract

The authors have developed a modelling approach for Automatic Debiting Systems (ADS) on motor highways and realised a generic software environment to implement these models. The tool, called ADS-SIM, is currently used in a project of the Dutch Government to assess the technical feasibility of ADS's proposed by industry. An ADS is modelled by a top-down, hierarchical decomposition, resulting in a number of (virtual) sub-components. It is assumed that the sub-components have a well-defined state which changes on pre-computable timestamps. The ADS can now be represented as a discrete event system. ADS-SIM is a discrete event simulation environment specifically tailored to implement high-level ADS models. ADS-SIM is a versatile tool which not only is used to assess the technical feasibility of an ADS, but can also be applied as a computer aided design tool.
