Abstract

This paper presents a short description of the GEMINI system field trials which have been carried out on the Brescia-Trieste motorway corridor. The system used both RDS (Radio Data System) + TMC (Traffic Message Channel) and variable message signs (VMS) to disseminate driver information. Two sets of experiments were carried out. The first involved 500 drivers who were interviewed soon after passing the motorway tollgate. They were asked questions about the relevance, accuracy, timeliness, credibility and comprehensibility of the messages being provided. The second experiment involved 100 motorway company employees. These people were monitored using TV cameras to ascertain eye movements, and modifications to driving behaviour. They also filled in a questionnaire about messages being provided both via variable message signs, and via the in-car radio data service.
