Abstract

An advanced traffic signal control method was developed in which the conventional traffic-actuated traffic control is enhanced by the use of traffic image sensors offering simple and yet highly reliable signal control, thereby adding the function of varying the sequence of signal indications according to the traffic conditions and taking into consideration for control the factors such as the arrival timing of vehicles that have currently stopped due to a red light on the intersecting side and the presence or absence of vehicles remaining at the end of a green light. This new control method gave optimal control suiting the traffic conditions without the need for either control from the traffic control center or for changes in the control parameters of the local signal controller.
