Abstract

The immediate need of preserving and maintaining the highway investment has become a nationwide challenge. The nation's highways, built by earlier generations, are valued at more than $1.75 trillion. As responsible stewards of the highway system, present and future generations must not allow this investment to deteriorate. Since the early 1990s, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has increased focus on preservation to address the deterioration of the nation's infrastructure. This approach combines traditional engineering-based analytical tools with sensible economic guidelines. FHWA's commitment to this effort is evident in the funding it is providing and the partnerships that it is developing.
