Abstract

One of the aims of the European Commission is the development of interoperable electronic fee collection (EFC) services across Europe. ADVICE is one of seven projects funded by the Commission to investigate aspects of this service. The ADVICE project has been investigating automatic classification and enforcement equipment. Classification and enforcement equipment for mono-lane EFC systems are well developed, however with the expected procurement of multi-lane systems for EFC the demands on automatic classification and enforcement systems will be much greater. The ADVICE project aims to produce a set of Design Guidelines which will assist new operators/Member States to design and specify EFC systems which will meet their requirements. In addition, technical developments to classification and enforcement equipment and an interoperable EFC application based on claimed characteristic are being validated within the project. The ADVICE project is supported by DGXIII of the European Commission, being part of the Transport Telematics Applications Programme (T-TAP) and is currently due to be completed by the end of November 1999.
