Abstract

In many automobile accidents events immediately prior to the impact are critical predisposing factors. When an accident result in a fatality it is difficult to learn what events transpired immediately prior to the impact. A method of obtaining the needed pre-impact information is in use by the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory as part of its overall in-depth accident investigation studies. This method, known as the psychological autopsy, is described and an example is given.
