Abstract

A number of studies are outlined which describe the 'slowing with age phenomenom'. This chapter then further analyses simulator study data from Imbeau et al (1989). It describes quantitatively the effects on performance of the variables studied in order to provide designers with integrated performance data. The data are presented in the form of regression models that can be used in human factors design applications including computer simulation. Subjects in three age groups were studied: young (20-30), middle (30-50) and older (51-73). Vocal response time, glance time and deviation from lane position when presented with a display were measured. The results are discussed. Degradation of driving perfomance was demonstrated and body movement, age, contrast and character size found to be major determinants of word recognition performance.
