Abstract

In July 1990, the London Planning Advisory Committee (LPAC) commissioned Rendel Science & Environment (RSE) to undertake a study of the contribution of transport to air pollution in London. The basis of the study was to be data collected by RSE and it was to include information on pollution monitoring, exceedences of air quality guidelines, legislation relating to vehicle emissions and trends in pollution emissions in the UK. This paper is based on the findings of this study and also considers the likely effectiveness of new technology and transport and land use policies in bringing about a reduction in vehicle emissions in London.
