Abstract
The airbag is an inflatable pillow that has to slow down part of the human body when involved in a collision. The airbag starts playing an important role in avoiding injuries to the car driver and the occupant, and therefore, in realising a higher `passive' safety. This article describes the American legislation, examines how the airbag works, the technical solutions, the reliability, and an alternative system.
