Abstract

As driving a motorcycle is relatively more dangerous than driving a car, the need for more protection of the motorcyclist is becoming more and more necessary. Aside from the development and testing of protective clothing, braking devices and helmets, for many years now tests are being done with motorcycle airbags. This article describes the research on motorcycle airbags, how they can reduce injuries, describes crash tests. It describes in detail tests of 1) the TNO Road-Vehicles Research Institute on the usability of the motorcycle airbag and collision, and 2) of the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) on the usability of the motorcycle airbag, collision, driver behaviour, and the influence of weather. The results of these tests are mentioned. Further research is recommended.
