Abstract
This paper will present an overview of corrosion problems with steel culverts in Alberta and will discuss the types of cathodic protection systems used to arrest corrosion. A brief description of the theory behind cathodic protection will be presented, followed by a discussion on how Alberta has contracted out and supervised the work. Installation costs and monthly power costs will be reviewed, as will problems that have been encountered. The paper concludes with an outline of future directions such as database development, evaluation of existing CP systems, improved benefit cost predictions, remote monitoring and alternative products etc., designed to combat corrosion.
