Abstract

A conviction for drinking and driving may be the first indication that a patient is a problem drinker. General Practitioners should regard all convicted drink drivers as a 'risk group' for alcohol problems. By taking an alcohol history and sampling blood for abnormal levels of biological markers, the drink driving population can be screened. For problem drinking, effective intervention by the General Practitioner is described. (A)
