Abstract

Alcohol consumption is a major cause of motor vehicle accidents worldwide. This duty was undertaken to determine the magnitude of alcohol related accidents in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. A total of 104 motor vehicle accidents occurred in a nine-month period involving 188 people. More alcohol related accidents occurred at night and on weekends, particularly pay weekends. There is a need to carry out an awareness campaign about drinking and driving in the community and to establish random alcohol testing for drivers.
