This paper summarises highlights of a workshop held at Irvine, CA, USA onn reducing the prevalence of alcohol and other drugs in transport accidents in all modes; (2) gaps in the knowledge base; (3) opportunities and needs for future research. Another aim was to establish research needs and priorities for the next decade, for which the following guiding principles were formulated: (1) focus primarily on reducing the morbidity and mortality of alcohol and drug-related conditions; (2) examine alcohol, drugs and transport in a wider context; (3) do not `reinvent the wheel'; (4) collaborate more effectively in various ways; (5) learn from various long-term programmes that have reduced harm-producing behaviours; (6) find ways and means of advocating these researches. The experimental research agenda includes detection methods, and investigation of performance impairment for alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and prescribed drugs especially. Other research agendas include those for: (1) education; (2) legal control; and (3) rehabilitation, indirect programmes.
