After its introduction in 1974 the netherlands legislation on alcohol and driving has been reasonably successful, but alcohol use in traffic is still socially unacceptably high. It can be assumed that the total number of journeys under the influence of alcohol is much more than the 50000 which are heard by the court per year. The total number of accidents in which alcohol was involved is higher than the 10% which is indicated by police registration. Proposals for future research into the use of alcohol in traffic and into enforcement by the police related to it are presented. The use of drugs in combination with the use of alcohol will also be studied in the near future.
