During autumn 1981 the SWOV has carried out a research into the drinking and driving behaviour of drivers. The main purpose of the research has been to test a new procedure by which the research activities were combined with police enforcement and detection activities, the Alcocontrol was tested on accuracy and reliability. Comparison of the results of this research with police activities show that the police can detect four times more drivers which have a BAC of over 0.5 promille if the police should use the new a-select procedure and should use an equipment which is as accurate and reliable as the Intoxilyzer.
