Abstract

On November 1, 1974 new legislation on driving under the influence of alcohol came into force in the Netherlands. After this date is was forbidden to drive a vehicle with a blood alcohol content higher than 0.5 promille and the blood test became compulsory. The central question of the book is whether this legislation has had the wanted effect. In chapter i the modification of the legislation is given. Chapter ii outlines the consequences for the activities of the police. Chapter iii discusses some methodological problems in this kind of research. Chapter iv shows in which way the activities of the police have changed, while in chapter v the change in jurisdiction by the modified police activities is given. Chapter vi describes the results of before and after studies of drinking and driving behaviour. In chapters vii and viii conclusions are drawn and recommendations are given.
