Abstract

This study introduces a collision avoidance system at all-way stop controlled intersections to enhance efficiency and safety utilizing wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies. An operational and functional algorithm ofall-way stop controlled intersection is demonstrated based on WSN based detectors, LED traffic signs, and a controller specifically designed for right of ways assignments. A prototype is installed in a test site of all way stop controlled intersection for the implementation of collision avoidance system with the traffic sensors based on wireless sensor networks. Findings from this study suggest that the proposed collision avoidance algorithm based on WSN would be implemented in improving both safety and efficiency at unsignalized intersections with the goal of higher driver compliancetowards stopping at the intersection and having the right of ways.
