Abstract

The paper presents a new modelling technique of time allocation in transportation, which accounts for limited amounts of time and money, available for travel. The theory of flexible budgets, as introduced by Golob et al. (1981) and Downes and Emmerson (1985), is transformed into a mathematical formulation of transportation planning models. This utility maximisation approach is used, where the utility of undertaking an activity is dependent on the type, duration and location (in terms of travel distance) of that activity. (A)
