Abstract

A survey of patents, literature, and manufacturers provided fifty passive restraint devices which were classified into seven categories: shields, nets, cushions, arms and barriers, seat belts, integrated seats, and blankets. These were examined in a preliminary analysis to select the concept having the greatest potential to equal or exceed the life-saving potential of the inflatable restraint system. A passive seat belt system was the best device uncovered.
