Abstract

Alternative forms of intersection control have the potential to reduce signal delay during times of low flow. This would contribute to lower motoring costs and reduced driver frustration. The specific low volume strategy of turning signals to flashing amber operation late at night has been investigated in terms of savings in delay and fuel consump- tion. Evaluation of benefits for a "typical" real site has shown that although conversion costs would be low, estimated operational benefits would also be low and would be highly sensitive to possible road accident increases.
