Alternative Specifications of Scheduling Delay Components: Effect of Travel Time Uncertainty and Departure Time Rescheduling.

Abstract

This paper investigates the influences of different specifications of scheduling delay components in the utility functions of time choice models. The paper takes into account the uncertainty in travel time and arrival time, which complicates the specification of scheduling delays. Furthermore, the paper aims at improving the choice models by incorporating scheduling delays for both the departure side and arrival side of a trip. The paper found that specifications based on the earliest possible arrival time are the most plausible and that the corresponding values of times, values of schedule delays, and values of reliability are consistent with other findings in the literature. The paper found that scheduling delays at the departure side and arrival side were significant simultaneously. In that case the departure scheduling late is relatively high, while arrival side scheduling delays are lower and equal. It seems that the imbalance between early and late scheduling delays is captured by the late departure rescheduling.
