Abstract

Driving behaviour is conceptualised from a system analytical point of view. Four levels of analysis are distinguished : selection of destination and means of transportation, route choice, manoeuver selection, vehicle operatlon and controL Hierarchical relations between and feedback loops within these levels are illustrated. Criteria for driver behaviour, such as travel time, driver effort, level of control and their possible interrelations are discussed. Driving task analysis is assumed to have a function besides the construction of general theories on human functioning and the design of driving conditions. Problems in the assimilation of knowledge from widely different fields, however, cannot be disregarded. (Author/publisher)
