Abstract

The overriding conclusion from this analysis is that it is difficult to determine whether there ia any real difference in accident risk at night whilst travelling on freeways with lighting or without lighting. Therefore, taking into consideration the high costs of installation, operation and maintenance of lighting on freeways, it can be concluded that freeway lighting cannot be justified on the basis of road safety benefits in terms of cost savings in accident reduction.
