Abstract

The objective of this report is to describe and summarize the research and projects carried out by various agencies and organizations in order to find a solution to the problem of traffic congestion. In this report promising and non-promising areas are identified. One of the most promising developments in the field of traffic control in the concept of freeway entrance ramp control. Projects carried out in this field are described. Projects in the field of traffic signal control by computer are discussed as being another research area. In the field of communication between vehicles experiments are carried out with cars instrumented with electronic devices. In this area rear-end lighting systems are tested also. Descriptions of the more important projects are contained in the Appendix.
