The maintenance management workshop was organized to report on research projects having to do with systematizing maintenance operations that were being supported in some states. The purpose of most of the research projects is to design a system to optimize the use of funds available for highway operations. The activities of a three day seminar, held in july, 1968 to inform all participants of the research work being done, are reported. Sixteen talks presented at the seminar are summarized. Eleven of the talks have state highways as a frame of reference, 2 deal with the county and city approach and 3 concern satellite programs of the maintenance management system. After the presentation of of the papers, group seminars were formed to allow questions to be asked of the representatives of those states which were conducting maintenance management programs. The questions centered around the following topics: (1) role of consultants, (2) the source of manpower to act as liaison between the consultant and the state highway department, (3) how to sell the program to the highway administration, and (4) how to sell the program to the maintenance people.
