Abstract

This technical paper examines the costs per unit area of more than two hundred schemes, and classifies them according to whether they are in urban or rural areas, and according to the different types of improvement (new roads, widenings, etc.). It also analysis the total cost into its various components (purchase of land, earthworks, cost of constructing the carriageway, etc.) and discusses the relative importance of some of them. All the information for this study was taken from the Headquarters Highway Engineering files of the Ministry of Transport to whom acknowledgements are made for their assistance and co-operation.
