Abstract

In recent years, the number of traffic accident shows gradual decrease insevere injuries, whereas there remains a high level in the total number of accidents. Many traffic accidents occur in intersections and especially the yellow light is more dangerous because drivers occasionally fall into a dilemma either entering in the intersection or stopping at stop-line. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the detail of drivers' behavior during yellow light. In this paper, using the continuous recording type drive recorder, many data in which drivers enter to the intersections in the yellow phase has been extracted. Analyzing the collected data, individual characteristic behaviors in the yellow phase are classified. Indexes that give quantitative analysis of drivers hurry driving caused by yellow signalstarting are also proposed. The obtained understandings are useful for considering ITS technologies such as traffic signal control with vehicle telecommunication.
