Abstract

The measure used in most accident studies is as follows: accident rate = number of accidents divided by the vehicle miles travel. However, methodological problems would arise if the same measure is used in comparing accident data for different vehicle categories, e.g. heavy trucks versus light trucks. This article addresses this issue, and presents a procedure for analyzing accident data involving trucks of varying sizes.
