Abstract

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PROBABILITY OF MODERATE OR WORSE INJURIES AND IMPACT SPEED ARE ESTIMATED FOR AUTOMOBILE COLLISIONS WITH BREAKAWAY LIGHT STANDARDS, RIGID LIGHT STANDARDS, "W"-BEAM GUARDRAILS, AND VARIOUS OTHER RIGID OBJECTS. THE RESULTING EQUATIONS INDICATE THAT BOTH BREAKAWAY LIGHT STANDARD IMPACTS AND GUARDRAIL IMPACTS ARE LESS SEVERE THAN RIGID OBJECT IMPACTS WITH THE GREATEST REDUCTION IN SEVERITY OCCURRING AT HIGH IMPACT SPEEDS. THE BENEFIT OF RESTRAINT USE IN THESE TYPES OF IMPACTS IS ALSO DEMONSTRATED. A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BREAKAWAY SUPPORT AND TRAFFIC BARRIER LITERATURE IS ALSO INCLUDED.(Author/publisher).
