Abstract

Accidents involving public transport vehicles and vulnerable users have generally important consequences in terms of injuries seriousness. One of the objective of the project PUVAME, supported by the French research programme PREDIT, was to better understand the accidents scenarios, in order to make recommendations for the HMI development of an alert system. This system would support the bus driver by making him/her aware about critical external events such as pedestrians through automatic detection. This approach has been conducted through an analysis of real bus accidents, which allowed defining categories of critical scenarios involving vulnerable users. Recommendations for the alert system functions and HMI have been built up for designers, then evaluated and validated through deep interviews and observation of a set of bus drivers.
