Abstract

In this report the methods used to analyse the compaction process using pneumatic-tyred rollers are developed and applied to smooth-wheeled, sheepsfoot and grid rollers. Calculations again using a shear stress with depth approach were applied on the cohesive soils while a bearing capacity method was used on the granular soils. Comparison of the calculated densities with measured results showed generally good agreement and that the idealisations and analyses developed were capable of determining the levels of compaction achieved by dead-weight rollers.
