Analysis of a thirteen year old RAP site in South Australia.

Abstract

The State Road Authority in Adelaide 13 years ago placed in sequence ten wearing course sections of an AC10 asphalt with varying percentages of RAP and bitumen viscosities on a flexible pavement of a main arterial road, to monitor the performance of surfacings with RAP incorporated. A recent inspection highlighted wheel path ravelling in most of the mix sites, suggesting that the surfacings were nearing the end of their useful life. An investigation was carried out in which large slabs were removed from the ten pavement sites, beams and cylindrical samples prepared and a range of tests carried out to determine which if any may correlate with the visual ravelling rankings of the various sites. This paper presents the problems associated with testing thin surfacing layers, and the findings from the tests performed on the asphalt slabs extracted.
