In recent years, the replacement of mandatory stop by mandatory yield at junctions in the main national road network has become increasingly common. The purpose of this study was to examine what effect this has had on traffic safety. Even though there is a high degree of uncertainty in the results, they nonetheless indicate that traffic safety has deteriorated. The increase in traffic accident casualties, including fatalities, is estimated at roughly 20%. The study has also provided and opportunity to follow up junctions with painted road markings indicating spaces or lanes for left-turning traffic. This measure has greatly reduced the number of accidents. (A)
