Abstract

The 'Guidelines for the design of rural roads' (RAL) were released in spring 2013. It applies to new construction as well as reconstruction and widening of rural roads. The guidelines pursue the target to standardize the construction of rural roads as far as possible to influence driver behavior and to improve road safety. For this purpose four design classes have been defined (EKL). The success of the new design principle implies that the concept is transferable to the existing network. In that case, adjusted design values and parameters to adapt existing roads into design classes must be defined. This is realized with the preparation of 'Guidelines to transfer the principle of the design classes on the existing road network' (M EKLBest). The first guidelines draft was prepared by the end of 2009. Therefore the content was not adapted to the recommendations of the RAL. Furthermore, there was no knowledge about the possibility of problems by the application of the M EKLBest draft on specific planning projects. The aim of the project was to apply the M EKLBest draft on specific planning projects and to propose modifications and additions for the M EKLBest draft. For the preparation of a collective of test roads, several road administrations of the federal states of Germany were asked to propose suitable roads and road planning projects for investigation. Out of the proposals, suitable test roads were chosen for each road category. Afterwards, the M EKLBest draft was applied on the test roads. This was carried out in close cooperation with the road administrations. So, their conceptions and ideas were taken into account too. Thereby, the possibility of problems by the application of the M EKLBest draft was also checked. With the findings of the discussions with the road administrations and of the investigations modifications and additions for the M EKLBest draft were prepared. These are the discussion basis for the subcommittee 2.2.2 'Improve existing roads' of the German Road and Transportation Research Association (FGSV) to revise the M EKLBest draft. (Author/publisher)
